Off-grid & Hybrid Solar

Plan energy storage around the equipment that must keep running. Off-grid and hybrid systems combine solar generation with storage and controls, but they serve different operating conditions.

Off-grid: design for energy independence
An off-grid installation is planned without relying on the public grid for normal supply. The daily energy requirement, night-time loads and periods of weak sunshine all affect panel and battery sizing. A monthly average generation estimate alone cannot establish reliable year-round autonomy.
Hybrid: coordinate solar, storage and available sources
A hybrid arrangement can combine solar, batteries and a compatible grid or generator interface. Its actual operating modes depend on the selected inverter and the approved installation. Backup circuits, changeover behaviour and export capability must be defined; the word hybrid does not guarantee every function.
Separate critical loads from the whole building
List each essential appliance, its running power, starting demand and required operating time. Keep optional large loads separate. The inverter must support the relevant power demand, while the battery must provide enough usable energy for the intended duration under its operating limits.
Compare usable storage, not just nameplate capacity
Battery planning should account for permitted depth of discharge, conversion losses, temperature, ageing and compatible charging settings. A suitable installation also needs ventilation or environmental control as specified, protection, isolation and service access. Battery replacement and lifecycle costs belong in the financial review.
Agree the operating sequence
Document what happens when the grid fails, when battery charge is low and when an alternative source becomes available. A site-specific design and commissioning plan should verify these modes. Net metering is relevant only where an eligible grid connection and approved export arrangement exist.
